Hunting of a dolphin (possibly bottlenose or striped dolphin) by killer whales encountered during a sighting survey of marine mammals by T/S Ushio-maru, Hokkaido University. A skin sample was biopsied from one of the individuals (KU -OO095, *1), and the D-loop region and cytochrome b region of mtDNA were analyzed. The haplotype of this individual was consistent with the mammal-eating ecotype among reported in the North Pacific. This survey was conducted by the HokkaidOcean Mammal Team (researchers: Iwahara et al., video: Tashiro).
