The coots were diving into the river to collect waterthymes. On the surface of the water, the gadwalls were waiting for the coot to surface. When a coot with waterthymes surfaced, the gadwalls would snatch the plants. Sometimes, in pursuit of a fleeing coot with the plants, the gadwall would intercept the plants. In addition, the gadwalls were sometimes kept in the spill. The coots did not drive away the gadwalls even though they were stolen the waterthymes.
