We surveyed predators of cherry salmon Oncorhynchus masou carcasses in the upper reaches from fishway of the Fukutoyo River and the Haginosawagawa River from 22 September 2024 to 11 October 2024. As a result, two raccoon dogs Nyctereutes procyonoides preyed on a salmon carcass. Although predation on the salmon careass have mainly been discussed in relation to Oncorhynchus spp. (chum salmon O. keta, sockeye salmon O. nerka or pink salmonO. gorbuscha) and brown bear Ursus arctos, the salmonid fish is also thought to be an important food resource for small mammals.
